About Metformin:

Metformin Mylan (Metformin Hydrochloride) - 850mg (500 Tablets) is used to lower blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus. It can also be used together with insulin for type-1 diabetes where the insulin administered is not enough. Metformin Mylan is prescribed for first time diagnosis of hyperglycemia or when alternative medicine fails. Patients who cannot lower their blood sugar through diet and exercise, e.g. obese patients can benefit from Metformin Mylan.

The active ingredient, metformin hydrochloride, belongs to the biguanide class of drugs and works by lowering posprandial (after a meal) and basal (between meals) glucose levels. This is done by reducing glucose production in the liver, increasing insulin sensitivity to fat and muscle tissue and finally reducing intestinal absorption of glucose.

How to use Metformin

This drug is taken orally, and each tablet contains 850mg of metformin hydrochloride. `Follow the dosage prescribed by the doctor and the dietary plan as well. Exercise improves the effectiveness of the drug, and you should test for sugar in blood or urine as instructed. Take Metformin Mylan with food to prevent gastrointestinal side effects. Swallow the pill whole without chewing or breaking it.

Metformin Dosage

The dosage will differ according to your specific condition and your age. For adults, the initial dose is usually 850-1000mg taken once per day although it can be increased to one 850mg tablet taken three times daily. When administered with insulin, the dose is lowered to 500mg per day. Children can take one 500mg tablet twice a day although the doctor has to assess the patient first. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember or skip it if it’s close to your next dose. Do not overdose to recover a missed dose.

Metformin Side Effects

Patients using Metformin Mylan can experience side effects such as; nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, metallic taste in the mouth and loss of appetite. These usually occur at the beginning of treatment and disappear after a while. Other serious side effects include lactic acidiosis, lower liver function, mild erythema, pruritis and urticaria, hepatitis and decreased vitamin B-12 absorption. Also, if you have a history of liver and kidney disease, diabetic ketoacidiosis, heart problems, pancreatitis or are undergoing radiology treatment with iodinated agents, you should inform your doctor so that they can determine the correct dose for you.
