About Metformin: Metformin (Metformin Hydrochloride) - 850mg (500 Tablets) is an oral drug used for its antihyperglycemic properties in the management of type 2 diabetes. It works by improving the glucose tolerance in such patients. This drug has 850mg of the active ingredient, metformin hydrochloride, in each tablet. Metformin hydrochloride decreases the amount of hepatic glucose produced and also inhibits absorption of glucose in the intestines. It develops higher insulin sensitivity by increasing the uptake and utilization of peripheral glucose. Metformin is an improvement compared to sulfonylureas (type 2 diabetes drugs) which can cause hypoglycemia and hyperinsulinemia.

How to use Metformin

This drug is administered orally in tablet form. Follow the doctor’s instructions on the dosage to take. It is usually taken alongside insulin to improve the results and have better control of the blood glucose levels. Since the response to the drug is monitored by the doctor, the dosage is lowered or increased according to the effect on your blood glucose levels.

Metformin Dosage

The starting dosage of Metformin (Metformin Hydrochloride) - 850mg (500 Tablets) is usually one tablet taken 2 or 3 times a day. This dose is maintained for 10 to 15 days after which it is adjusted according to your blood sugar readings. After the first two weeks, the doctor can increase the dose but should do so gradually. When administered with insulin, the insulin dose can as well be increased after assessment. Elderly patients’ dosage depends on the renal function. Children and adolescents should take 500 to 850mg once daily with a maximum of 2g daily. The maximum adult dose recommended for metformin hydrochloride is 3g divided into 3 doses.

Metformin Side Effects

Metformin (Metformin Hydrochloride) - 850mg (500 Tablets) has some side effects including; nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and abdominal pain. Skin reactions such as pruritus, erythema, and urticaria can occur although they’re very rare. Other side effects include a change in nail color, headaches and a metallic taste in the mouth. Side effects usually occur when the treatment is started and go away spontaneously. Inform your doctor of any adverse side effects so that the dose is adjusted.

Metformin Precautions

The doctor should reduce your metformin dose if you are currently using other diabetes medication like insulin and insulin-releasing drugs. Heart medication and blood pressure drugs like furosemide and nifedipine also increase the metformin levels in the blood and should not interact with this drug. Other drugs like calcium channel blockers and diuretics make metformin less effective in lowering blood sugar levels. Avoid using heart rhythm medication, cholesterol drugs, glaucoma medicine, topiramate, phentyoin, antibiotics, stomach medication, pain medication, malaria drugs, tuberculosis, thyroid, estrogens, and phenothiazines when taking metformin because they reduce its effectiveness.
