About Triomune :
Triomune 40 (Stavudine/Lamivudine/Nevirapine) is a drug constituting a combination of three different antiretroviral agents namely Stavudine, Lamivudine and Nevirapine. This medicine is used as a maintenance treatment in adults diagnosed with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). This drug works by slowing the progression of the virus by inhibiting the action of the viral-specific enzyme reverse transcriptase (RT). As a result, the immune system is boosted and the infection is taken into control.
The medicine comes in a package containing 30 tablets that are taken orally with plenty of water. It can be swallowed on an empty stomach but when nausea is experienced, patients are advised to have a meal first. It is important to note that the tablets are to be consumes as whole without dissolving, crushing or altering with the structure of the tablets whatsoever. Always follow the doctor’s prescription at all times and seek for a professional clarification of any issue you may have.
Each tablet in the package of 30 tablets contain 40mg of Stavudine, 150mg of Lamivudine, and 200mg of Nevirapine. The doctor will determine the right dosage after conducting a medical examination of your condition. The most probable prescription would be to take one tablet twice daily – given that each tablet contains only a half of each active ingredient, taking the tablets twice will amount to the required dose of Stavudine, Lamivudine and Nevirapine.
Using Triomune can have side effects to the patients if used for a while. For instance, the antiretroviral agents found in the medicine can occasionally lead to fatal cases of lactic acidosis. Indicators of developing lactic acidosis include nausea, vomiting, having difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, muscle weakness or weight loss. As soon as you notice any of these signs, seek immediate medical attention.
The individual active ingredients in the medicine have been reported to have side effects as listed below:
Stavudine: severe peripheral neuropathy which is usually dose related and common in patients with advanced HIV infection or those who have suffered peripheral neuropathy in the past.
Lamivudine: vomiting, nausea, headaches, abdominal pain, skin rash, peripheral neuropathy, pancreatitis, myalgias, and arthralgias.
Nevirapine: development of rash and liver toxicity which should be watched closely since can be potentially life-threatening.
If you have ever had an allergic reaction to any of the active ingredients – Stavudine, Lamivudine or Nevirapine – it would not be proper to use this medicine. Pregnant patients, or those breastfeeding should not use Triomune since it may affect the foetus and the nursing baby respectively. Moreover, patients suffering from kidney, liver diseases or peripheral neuropathy, which leads to the damaging of the nerves in the hands and limbs, should not use Triomune.
Only use this drug if you have received previous medication of HIV using nevirapine. It is therefore important that you consult a doctor before you start your medication. Some medicines can interact negatively with Triomune resulting to the hindrance of the functionality of either medicine. Such medicines include rifampin, sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, ribavirin, doxorubicin, oral contraceptives, methadone, ketoconazole, and other antiretroviral agents including indinavir, efavirenz, and lopinavir among others.
