Shytomel (Liothyronine Sodium) is a medicine used to treat a condition referred to as hypothyroidism. This condition in the body causes when thyroid hormones are not produced in enough quantities and if left untreated leads to myxedema. Some symptoms through which patients can use to identify if they are suffering from this condition includes abnormal deposits of dry and waxy materials on the skin, swollen lips, and thickened nose. Liothyronine Sodium is the active ingredient in Shytomel and is a thyroid hormone which is natural-occurring but artificial in form.
Shytomel (Liothyronine Sodium) is administered orally as a replacement therapy for the production of thyroid hormones for patients with low levels of the hormone. The pills can also be used for treatment as well as prevention of iodine deficiency disorder normally referred to as a goiter. Goiter is normally evidenced in patients by abnormally big thyroid glands. Prescriptions by your physician should strictly be adhered to. Depending on what condition you are being treated, your weight, medical condition and history your physician will prescribe a dosage for you.
Once you start using the drugs, maintain a regular schedule and take them at the same repeated time, everyday. Typically, a starting dosage for adult patients is 5mcg tablet taken once a day. These tablets can be consumed with or without food. The dosage may increase up to 25mcg after several weeks depending on how your physician diagnoses your response. In case you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember and if you miss more than one dose in a row, consult your physician. Never take a double dose as compensation for a missed dose.
