About Melanorm: Melanorm (Hydroquinone) is a drug used in lightening darkened skin parts. This medicine is prescribed for patients with age spots, freckles, scars caused by acnes and chloasma (also known as melasma). Melanorm’s method of action is controlling the amount of melanosomes which are also known as melanin pigment granules. Other than that, the medicine also increases the rate of breakdown of these granules. It can perform these actions through inhibiting actions of the enzyme required to produce melanin, which is known as tyrosinase.

How to use Melanorm

This medicine should be applied strictly as your physician instructs. It is available as a cream and should only be applied to the parts that are being treated. For most adult patients, they are required to apply it twice each day preferably after every 12 hours. Before applying, wash your hands properly so as not to contaminate the cream. Also, wash the area to be applied and let it dry. Ensure that you apply only in the affected area so as to avoid lightening of other areas. Your doctor may prescribe for you to use a sunscreen during your treatment. To get the most benefit from the medicine, follow the instructions properly. After applying for the medicine, wash your hands immediately so as to avoid the spread of the cream in other areas.

Melanorm Dosage

Before prescribing for you a treatment dosage, your doctor will conduct a skin sensitivity test to establish the correct prescriptions for your condition. This may involve the application of the cream to a small hyperpigmented patch of the skin. Treatment will only begin if that specific area of your skin does not experience itchiness or redness. Most adults are instructed to apply the cream twice on a daily basis until when their dosage is over or when instructed by their physicians.

Melanorm Side Effects

You may experience side effects when using this medicine. The most severe side effects that you may experience include; swelling of the areas you are treating, itchiness, crusting of the skin, the feeling of a severe burning, allergic contact dermatitis, and any other skin discoloration conditions. For patients who have used the cream for long, exogenous ochronosis development may be normal to such patients.

Melanorm Precautions

Only apply small amounts of the cream to the area that is darkened and check within the next 24 hours to see if any serious side effects would have occurred. Never apply this cream to areas of your skin that are sore, broken or dry. If you are allergic to this medicine or any of its active ingredients, inform your doctor before proceeding with your treatment. Contact your doctor as soon as you notice any signs of allergic reactions when using this medicine which may include; chest tightness, hives and skin rashes, difficulties in swallowing and breathing as well as swelling of body parts. This medicine may not be suitable for all patients, and you should contact your physician to understand the risks;
