About Amantrel:

Amantrel is the brand name for Amantadine Hydrochloride. It is an antiviral medication which comes in a 100 mg package and contains 15 capsules. Amantrel is used to block virus activity and is commonly used to treat Influenza A, Parkinson’s disease and “Parkinson-like” symptoms such as shaking and muscle stiffness. Drug-induced extra-pyramidal reactions can also be alleviated with Amantrel, e.g., movement problems. Although it treats influenza A (flu), it should not be a substitute for periodical flu shots.

How to use Amantrel

Amantrel has amantadine hydrochloride as the main ingredient which restores the delicate chemical balance between acetylcholine and dopamine. These two neurochemicals found in the brain are responsible for neuro-transmission. Amantrel can be taken alongside antipsychotic drugs used in the treatment of schizophrenia. These drugs cause side effects alike those of Parkinson’s disease whereby the patient experiences are shaking of muscles, poor muscle tone and difficulty in executing voluntary motions. When the patient stops using these drugs, the unwanted side-effects reduce but the symptoms of the psychotic disease come back. Using Amantrel alongside antipsychotic medication is, therefore, the best remedy.

Amantrel Dosage

Amantrel has 100 mg capsules with 15 capsules in a pack. It is a prescription drug, and your doctor will instruct you on the correct dosage. However, there are standard dosages you can expect. Patients experiencing Parkinson’s-like side effects from drugs can take two 100 mg capsules per day. If the symptoms are severe, the doctor can even prescribe 300 mg per day and less than 100 mg for other less serious cases. For those with kidney disease and are on hemodialysis, the dosage should be lower and can be instructed to take 100 mg daily or as little as 200 mg per week.

Amantrel Side Effects

Amantrel may cause some side effects including;

  • Difficulty in sleeping
  • Headaches and fatigue (some experience a spinning sensation)
  • Lack of coordination
  • Dryness of the mouth and nose
  • Blurred vision

Gastrointestinal side effects do exist with patients experiencing nausea, dryness of the mouth, vomiting, constipation, and loss of appetite. These side effects can be treated individually as you continue using Amantrel. Other side effects include nervousness or anxiety, euphoria, hallucinations, impaired concentration, aggressive behavior, forgetfulness, and seizures. Seizures are serious side effects, and one should visit their doctor if this or more symptoms persist. Side effects appear between one month and a year of using the drug.

Amantrel Precautions

As previously discussed, Amantrel increases the dopamine levels in the brain in order to restore muscle movement. This makes it a risk for patients with a history of seizures of epilepsy. Such patients should be monitored while using this prescription drug. Elderly patients and those with kidney problems should also be careful when using Amantrel. Another precaution to take is avoidance of operating heavy machinery or driving while taking Amantrel. It can cause visual impairment and affect coordination and mental alertness. Taking this drug alongside antipsychotic medication can cause hallucinations and confusion. Avoid using Amantrel with stimulants like amphetamines since the increased nervous stimulation can lead to a higher likelihood of seizures.
